Description
The Juneau-Douglas Community College was officially organized on April 11, 1956, under the Community College Enabling Act, Chapter 57 of the Session Laws of Alaska, 1953 Legislature, as amended by Chapter 58 of the Session Laws of Alaska, 1955 Legislature. The College opened on September 10, 1956, with Mrs. Dorothy H. Novatney, Ed.D., as Director. The College was a unit of the Juneau-Douglas Independent School District educational services to the communities of Juneau and Douglas and their environs, and was jointly sponsored by the University of Alaska. In 1962, the State Legislature made the University of Alaska solely responsible for the academic program and the School District responsible for all direct costs of non-degree programs.
