Abstract

Hysterical is an exhibition consisting of 11 ceramic sculptures, five paintings, and four digital prints. The work in this show dissects my interactions and experiences with womanhood, femininity, fatness, gender and sexuality. Working within three main themes, I attempt to find my place within those constructs; the first being my relationship with my body and my existence within that body in relation to the rest of the world, the exploitation of and oppression of women and feminine presenting people economically, politically, and socially, and lastly, the onus of violence and the idea of protection. Using familiar imagery as metaphor, I explore my own trauma in an attempt to find rational and better understand myself. I attempt to insert humor or comic relief into somewhat dark and at times scary subjects so as to not retraumatize experiences echoed by many women while leaving room for a dialogue between viewers with different lived experiences or lack of lived experiences. The use of traditionally binary colors works to both reinforce and call into question the idea of two strictly defined paths and the limitations of each prescribed role. It also highlights the power balances of the issues this work is addressing. While I hope my work can be accessible and understood by many, this show also recognizes the limited lens of intersectionality I bring to the work. More than anything, my work is made in the attempt that it will evoke an emotional response from the viewer and to display a perspective that cultivates meaningful thought and progressive conversation.
